"Soil" is set in the pulsing, gulchy, digestive system of the underground, an homage to the powerful transformative and generative capacities of subterranean ecosystems. It features a number of field recordings of soil that Cosmo made in the Ecuadorian high cloud forest (one of which was made in the exact location that Giuliana Furci, of the Fungi Foundation, collected a new species of psilocybin-producing 'magic' mushroom). In addition, it features recordings made on a field trip to Patagonia with the Society for the Protection of Underground Networks (SPUN).

Some of the percussive elements of the song are sonifications of bioelectrical recordings of oyster and turkey tail mushrooms recorded by Michael Prime, honey fungus and Winecap mushrooms recorded by Cosmo, together with recordings of an oyster toad fish and a buck toothed parrot fish. The song also features recordings of a nightingale that I recorded in Kent, a cuckoo from Sussex, and recordings of humpback whales recorded by the Monterray Accelerated Research System (MARS).
